EDUARDO NOVAIS (USA)

I AM AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON FROM BRAZIL, WHERE I ATTENDED MEDICAL SCHOOL AND ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY RESIDENCY. BETWEEN 2003/04, I SPENT 18 MONTHS IN THE UNITED STATES FOR PEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDICS FELLOWSHIP AND TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP. I WAS IN PRACTICE IN BRAZIL UNTIL 2008 WHEN A PREVIOUS FELLOWSHIP DIRECTOR MADE AN OFFER FOR ME TO COME TO JOIN HIS PRACTICE. HOWEVER, FURTHER TRAINING IN THE US WAS MANDATORY. I RETURNED TO THE US AND ATTENDED A PEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDIC FELLOWSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, A MUSCULOSKELETAL ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP AT THE MAYO CLINIC AND HIP PRESERVATION SURGERY AT BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.

I THEN JOINED THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO/CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, COLORADO, WHERE I SPENT FOUR YEARS. I DEDICATED MY TIME FOR CLINICAL ACTIVITY AND RESEARCH. I WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE CHILD AND ADULT HIP PRESERVATION PROGRAM AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, WHICH REQUIRED ABOUT 10-15% OF ADMINISTRATIVE TIME. I ALSO SERVED AS THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL ORTHOPAEDIC DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, AND I WORKED VERY CLOSELY WITH THE ORTHOPEDIC RESIDENCY DIRECTOR. IN 2015 I WAS RECRUITED BY THE BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL ORTHOPAEDIC DEPARTMENT TO WORK AS A PEDIATRIC HIP SURGEON AND TO HELP CONTINUE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR HIP PROGRAM.

I HAVE BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS AND HIP PROGRAM AT BOSTON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FOR FOUR YEARS. I RUN AN OUTPATIENT CLINIC TWICE OR THREE TIMES PER WEEK AT THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AND AN OPERATING ROOM TWICE OR THREE TIMES A WEEK. I ALSO HAVE EXPANDED MY ROLE IN THE ORTHOPEDIC COMMUNITY AT LONGWOOD BY JOINING THE ORTHOPEDIC DEPARTMENT AT THE BETH ISRAEL MEDICAL CENTER AND THE BRIGHAM AND WOMEN'S HOSPITAL, WHERE I PERFORM HIP SURGERY IN PATIENTS OLDER THAN 35 YEARS OF AGE.

MY BUSY CLINICAL PRACTICE HAS NOT DEVIATED MY ATTENTION TO MY CLINICAL RESEARCH ENDEAVORS. I HAVE DEDICATED TIME TO RESEARCH, INCLUDING A HALF OR A FULL DAY PER WEEK. WHEN I MOVED TO BOSTON IN 2015, I HAD ABOUT 36 PEER-REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS. SINCE THEN, I HAVE PUBLISHED TWICE AS MUCH IN A SHORT PERIOD OF 4 YEARS. NOT ONLY I HAVE PUBLISHED MORE, BUT THE QUALITY OF THE RESEARCH HAS ALSO IMPROVED WITH MANUSCRIPTS PUBLISHED IN PRESTIGIOUS JOURNALS, INCLUDING THE JOURNAL OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY, THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF SPORTS MEDICINE, AND THE JOURNAL OF ORTHOPEDIC RESEARCH. THIS YEAR, WE COMPILED ENOUGH PRELIMINARY EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE SUBMISSION OF A RESEARCH PROJECT GRANT (R01) TO THE NIH. WE ARE PROPOSING A LONGITUDINAL INVESTIGATION ON THE ROLE OF OBESITY, HIGH IMPACT SPORTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCFE AND CAM FAI MORPHOLOGY.
